Deep bench helps Chargers defeat CSM
SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Briar Cliff University used a deep bench to fend off College of Saint Mary Saturday afternoon.
The Chargers, ranked No. 21 in the country, defeated CSM 73-55 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest. Briar Cliff got 32 points from players who came off the bench.
The Chargers outscored the Flames 20-12 in the opening quarter, 20-10 in the second quarter and 22-13 in the third quarter before CSM bested the home team 20-11 in the fourth frame.
"We seemed to be ready to play and had a decent first quarter," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "We just can't seem to sustain any momentum when we get it. We battled at the start of the third and had the lead down to 14, but a couple defensive breakdowns and it went right back to 20."
The Flames shot 41 percent from the floor, 35 percent from the 3-point range and 25 percent from the free-throw line. Briar Cliff shot 46 percent in the game, 32 percent from long distance and 85 percent from the charity stripe.
Allison Schubert (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) led CSM with 11 points, five rebounds and five steals. Teammate Kaylin Garza (FR/Belle Fourche, S.D.) tossed in 10 points, while Bailey White (SR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) added nine and Kenzi Hoit (SR/Omaha, Neb.) added seven. Allisa Schubert (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) and Clare Lewandowski (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) joined Allison Schubert in pulling down five boards. Allisa Schubert also contributed with five assists.
"Kaylin has back-to-back double figure games and is starting to be more consistent," Walker said. "Liss Schubert is shooting it well and we just have to get her to shoot it more.
"We did a much better job on the boards tonight as we only gave up five offensive rebounds. We also shot it well overall and were pretty good from three. We just have to find a way to clean up the defensive end. It's just the little fundamental things that are jumping up and getting us game by game."
The Flames drop to 2-12 in the GPAC and 5-15 overall. Briar Cliff improves to 11-3, 15-5.
CSM returns to action Wednesday at 6 p.m. at home vs. Doane University.
