Flames lose physical battle with Dordt
OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary soccer team lost a physical battle with Dordt University Saturday afternoon.
Dordt defeated the Flames 1-0 in the contest. It was CSM's first Great Plains Athletic Conference loss of the season.
It was a physical contest from the start and neither team scored in the opening half.
Defenders' Avril Baccam scored the only goal of the contest when she found the back of the net at 57:39. Teammate Katherine Kooiman earned the assist.
CSM Coach Jordan Irsik knew Baccam would be tough to face as she's one of the top goal scorers in the conference. But Baccam got one and it proved to be enough.
"I thought we executed our defensive strategy," Irsik said. "Our defense did all it could against them."
Dordt outshot the Flames 12-9 in the contest. Goalkeeper Gabby Felker (JR/Omaha, Neb.) had three saves in the first half and teammate Alivia Schade (SO/Kearney, Neb.) tallied two saves in the second half.
"Unfortunately, we didn't put away our chances and they did," Irsik said. "We have to find a way to win those tight games. We'll work to get back on a winning way next week."
The Flames are now 1-1 in GPAC play and 4-2-1 overall. Dordt improves to 1-1-0, 4-3. CSM plays next on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Mount Marty University.
* The physical play was a factor in the contest and four yellow cards were handed out.
