SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – College of Saint Mary pushed Dordt University to the wire, but ultimately settled for a 1-0 Great Plains Athletic Conference road soccer loss on Saturday at the Dordt Soccer Complex.
A year ago, Karinna Tel scored five goals in a 5-2 win over CSM en route to being named a third-team All-American and the GPAC Player of the Year. On Saturday, the Flames kept Tel out of the scoring column, but couldn't find the back of the net themselves.
"Really proud of the girls,'' CSM Coach Jamison Parkhill said. "They battled for 90 minutes. Just needed a little bit more to get a result.''
Dordt improved to 5-3-2 overall and 4-0-1 in GPAC play, while CSM dropped to 3-9-0 and 2-3-0.
The only goal of the match came in the 38th minute. Tel took a short pass and fired from close range on the right side. Jenna Brown made a nice initial save, but the ball caromed to Joslyn Terpstra, who punched in the rebound.
CSM had scoring chances. Dordt outshot the Flames 18-10, including 14-6 in shots on goal. Jimena Estrada Gomez led College of Saint Mary with four shots, including two on goal.
Brown, a junior keeper out of Omaha Westside, made 13 saves on the day for the Flames.
"Shoutout to Jenna Brown,'' Parkhill said. "She was massive for us today, and made some great saves to keep us in the game.''
CSM resumes play on Oct. 11 with a 1 p.m. home GPAC match against Briar Cliff University.
"We get a week off to get a little bit healthier and attack the last part of the season,'' Parkhill said.
