Flames pick up first win of the season

SEWARD, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary volleyball team earned its first win of the season Saturday at the Concordia Bulldog Bash. The Flames defeated Oklahoma City University 3-0 by scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-22.

"We had a much better performance today," CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "We seemed a little more in sync and our energy level was high."

Grace Werner led the Flames with 11 kills, while teammate Madisyn Havermann had eight and Morgan Ramsey finished with seven. Setter Kaitlyn Busby and Miranda Ring had 16 and 12 assists, respectively. Busby also had five ace serves in the match. Defensively, Elen Pruett tallied 14 assists and Caitlin McCormack added nine.

"Defensively we did a good job not letting balls hit the floor," Pruett said. "And in the third set our blocking finally picked up to help that cause.

"Offensively our leaders were Grace with 11 kills, Morgan rebounding with a really good offensive performance today and Azaria hitting .500 for the match."

The Flames are off until Aug. 23-24 when they play in the 2024 Gosarpy.com Classic hosted by Bellevue University. CSM plays Avila University at 11:30 a.m. Friday and then takes on Montana Tech at 7 p.m. later that night.

"It was nice to get our first win under our belt today and now we will shift our focus to get ready for the Bellevue tournament," Pruett said.
