Flames softball wins one, loses two

TUCSON, Ariz. – The College of Saint Mary softball team capped off a long day of three games with a victory Sunday.

The Flames defeated Bethany Lutheran College 3-2 in the Tucson Invitational Games. Earlier in the day, CSM lost 17-3 to Siena Heights University and 8-5 to University of St. Francis.

"It was a long day of softball and our ladies really battled," CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "It was great to end the day with a win."

Daisy Lowther (FR/Bennington, Neb.) pitched the complete-game win for CSM. She tossed all seven innings, allowed five hits, walked one and struck out four.

"Daisy threw a great game," Bray said. "She was hitting spots and keeping them off balance all day. She was a big leader for us out there."

The Flames scored one run in the first inning, one in the second and one in the sixth. The Vikings scored their two runs in the top of the first inning.

CSM had six hits – a double from Kaela Persico (FR/Bellevue, Neb.) and singles from Megan Garcia (SO/Elkhorn, Neb.), Mack Madrigal (SO/Omaha, Neb.), Sydney Griffin (SO/Lincoln, Neb.), Izzy Monzon (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) and Taylor Hrabik (FR/Omaha, Neb.).

"Three of our hits were from pinch hitters that came up big in clutch situation," Bray said. "Taylor had a huge game-winning hit."

Against Siena Heights, the Flames scored one run in the fourth and two in the fifth. The Saints scored one in the first inning, two in the second, seven in the third and seven in the fourth.

"The Siena Heights game got away from us," Bray said. "We struggled defensively again and couldn't get out of innings."

The Flames threw four pitchers in the game – Garcia, Lowther, Mickayla Larsen (SR/Waverly, Neb.) and Kymber Shallenberger (SO/Scottsbluff, Neb.). Garcia suffered the loss.

CSM had just four hits in the game – home runs from both Macy Homes (SR/Wahoo, Neb.) and Lowther, a double from Garcia and a single from Madrigal.

Against St. Francis, the Flames scored first with two runs in the top of the first inning, added two more in the second and had one run in the fourth. The Fighting Saints had four in the first, one in the second, one in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Lowther started in the circle, but made it just 1/3 inning before being relieved by Garcia. Garcia finished the game.

College of Saint Mary had nine hits in the contest – a homer by Lowther, doubles from Madrigal, Homes, Persico and Schewe and singles from Garcia, Morgan Ethen (SR/Omaha, Neb.), Madrigal and Monzon.

"We played a good game against St. Francis," Bray said. "A couple baserunning mistakes and bunt coverage miscues cost us."

The Flames are now 3-11 on the season and play their two final tournament games Monday.
