Flames lose home opener - on the road

OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary softball team played its home opener on the road Monday.

On the first day of Spring, the frost proved to be a challenge Monday afternoon. The soft field conditions forced the Flames to move their home opener to Connie Claussen Field at the University of Nebraska Omaha up the road.

The Flames lost the single game 10-4 to York University.

"We haven't played in two weeks so we really wanted to try to get at least one game in," CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "Our field looked good initially this morning and then the warm temperatures brought up a lot of moisture right before noon and we couldn't get the field to firm up.

"We're grateful for CSM's strong partnership with UNO and that they let us play on their amazing turf field."

The teams made the decision at 3:45 p.m. and were playing before 5 p.m. just up the road. Both teams agreed to shorten it to just one game instead of the complete doubleheader.

"Our ladies adjusted really well," Bray said. "I thought we came out ready to play and looked really good for the first few innings. I was impressed with our composure."

York scored the first run of the game with a solo homer in the second inning. The Panthers added one run in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth before scoring five in the seventh.

CSM scored three runs in the third inning when Savannah Schewe (JR/Elkhorn, Neb.) led off with a double and pinch runner Taylor Hrabik (FR/Omaha, Neb.) came in. After a fly out, Izzy Monzon (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) had a bunt single and advanced Hrabik to third. Monzon stole second. Macy Homes (SR/Wahoo, Neb.) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Hrabik. Then Kaela Persico (FR/Bellevue, Neb.) delivered the big blow with a two-run homer to left center.

The Flames added another run and took the lead in the fourth when Morgan Ethen (SR/Omaha, Neb.) led off with a walk and Kayla Reed (FR/Albuquerque, NM) pinch ran. Daisy Lowther (FR/Bennington, Neb.) singled to left. After a fielder's choice and Sydney Griffin (SO/Lincoln, Neb.) walk, Mickayla Larsen (SR/Waverly, Neb.) ripped a liner to left for a sacrifice fly to score Lowther.

York outhit the Flames 16-8 in the game and played errorless defense. CSM had three errors in the field.

"We did a lot of good things today including a nice double play and a couple diving catches," Bray said. "We played them much tougher today that we did when we saw them in Arizona."

The Flames fall to 3-14 on the season and return to action Wednesday with a home game vs. Hastings College. The conference opener is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
