Flames lose two nail-biters to Hastings College

OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary softball team lost two nail-biters against Hastings College Wednesday afternoon.

The Flames lost the opener 1-0 in 10 innings and then got beat 4-0 in the nightcap. It was the Great Plains Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

"We played easily the best defense we've played all year – without a doubt," CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "And our pitchers both tossed really solid complete games. But we couldn't get it going offensively today.

"If you would've have told me this morning that we'd play 17 innings and not score a single run I would never have believed that. That's been the area of our game that has been the strongest so far this season."

Both teams were held scoreless through nine innings of play in the opener. With the GPAC rules stating the game goes to international tiebreaker rules in the 10th inning, Hastings was able to score one in the 10th. But the Flames couldn't match it in the bottom of the frame.

Megan Garcia (SO/Elkhorn, Neb.) pitched all 10 innings for CSM and allowed just four hits, walked one and struck out two.

"Megan was amazing," Bray said. "It was probably one of the best games of her career here so far. She just did an excellent job and pitched well enough for us to get the win. To give up just four hits and one walk in 10 innings is phenomenal."

The Flames had just five hits. Kaela Persico (FR/Bellevue, Neb.) belted a double and teammates Izzy Monzon (SR/Lincoln, Neb.), Garcia, Mack Madrigal (SO/Omaha, Neb.) and Daisy Lowther (FR/Bennington, Neb.) all had singles.

College of Saint Mary had only four hits in the second game. Savannah Schewe (JR/Elkhorn, Neb.) had a double and teammates Persico, Madrigal and Sydney Griffin (SO/Lincoln, Neb.) each added a single.

Lowther tossed the complete game in the circle. She surrendered 12 hits, walked two and struck out three.

The Broncos had one run in the first inning and three runs in the seventh to secure the victory.

"We're frustrated that we couldn't walk away with any wins today," Bray said. "But there's a positive energy in our clubhouse from the players knowing that we are improving and doing a lot of things well. We just need to piece it together."

The Flames are now 0-2 in the GPAC and 3-16 on the season. CSM travels to Midland University for a GPAC doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
