Flames drop doubleheader to Nebraska Wesleyan

LINCOLN, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary softball team lost a nonconference doubleheader to Nebraska Wesleyan University Monday night.

The Flames lost the opener 5-2 and was defeated 9-1 in the nightcap.

"It was another day of us not being able to execute in multiple areas of the game at the same time," CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "In the first game we couldn't hit and in the second game we couldn't play defense. It's frustrating to not be able to piece it together."

The Flames were outhit 8-3 in the opener. Megan Garcia, Daisy Lowther and Sydney Griffin all had one hit each.

Garcia suffered the loss in the circle. She allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out two.

"We had a plan offensively and we didn't execute the scout," Bray said. "We prepared the ladies for what they were going to see but we didn't attack the ball. It was disappointing."

Bray said the Flames did a much better job at the plate in the second game, but errors defensively plagued the squad.

CSM finished with eight hits in that game. Garcia, Lowther and Griffin all had two hits each, while Kayla Reed and Taylor Hrabik each added one. One of Lowther's was a double.

Lowther was tagged with the loss. She surrendered eight hits before being relieved by Kymber Shallenberger in the sixth. Shallenberger gave up three hits.

"I was pleased to see our improvements at the plate," Bray said. "Even some of our outs in that second game were much better swings."

Bray also complimented the play of Garcia, Lowther and Griffin.

"Those three had nine of our 11 hits today and also did all the work pitching and catching," Bray said. "They came ready to play and really battled."

The Flames are now 3-18 on the season. CSM returns to action Wednesday with a 6 p.m. nonconference contest at Bellevue University. Wednesday's game will be a single game and will be a StrikeOut Cancer event.
