LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The College of Saint Mary softball team took a road trip to play University of Saint Mary Thursday and left Kansas with two losses.

The Spires won the first game 9-1 in five innings and won the second game 11-3 in six innings. CSM's losing streak stretches to 10 games with the losses.

"We're struggling," CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "Today was the first time I felt like we were just going through the motions. We've got some players out with injuries and we're playing some people out of position. But there still needs to be some fire and that attitude to compete."

The Flames were outhit 12-3 in the first game and also committed three errors.

Sydney Griffin led CSM with a double, while Izzy Monzon and Daisy Lowther had singles.

The Flames got their lone run in the third inning when Griffin walked and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Savannah Schewe. After a ground out, Monzon singled to score Griffin.

USM had one run in the first, one in the second and seven in the fourth for the win.

Megan Garcia took the loss in the circle for the Flames. She was relieved by Kymber Shallenberger in the fourth.

CSM scored first in the first inning of the second game.

With one out, Garcia singled. After a fly out, Lowther singled and advanced Garcia. Morgan Ethen then doubled to score both Garcia and Lowther. Mack Madrigal followed with a walk and was called safe on a Griffin ground ball on the next play to load the bases. Schewe was hit by a pitch to score Ethen.

But those three runs were the only runs the Flames would score in the game.

"Saint Mary made a pitching change and we did not adjust to the next pitcher," Bray said. "We started hitting the ball much better in the fifth and sixth inning but couldn't capitalize."

The Flames were outhit 13-5 in the game.

Lowther finished with two hits, including a double. Ethen, Garcia and Madrigal all had one hit each.

Lowther suffered the pitching loss. She was relieved by Micki Larsen in the fifth inning.

"We're frustrated," Bray said. "And the road doesn't get any easier with three big conference match-ups over the next five days. But we've got to battle and stay positive. There's still a lot of softball left to be played."

CSM is now 3-21 on the season and returns to action at Morningside University Saturday. First pitch is 1 p.m. – weather permitting.
