Flames are feelin' good after conference sweep

OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary softball team got a much-needed conference sweep over the University of Jamestown Monday.

The Flames beat Jamestown 1-0 in the first game and then 11-4 in the second game. It was the first time in school history that the Flames have swept the Jimmies.

"Wow – what a day!" CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "We finally put all three areas of the game together today. We pitched amazing, we played solid defense and our bats came alive. And we did that for two games.

"I couldn't be more happy for the ladies. They have been working so hard and have stayed committed to this team when things haven't been going our way. They deserved these two wins today."

In the opening game both teams were scoreless through five innings. CSM got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Daisy Lowther singled, Morgan Ethen put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Lowther, Lowther advanced to third on a wild pitch and then Savannah Schewe hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Lowther.

It was the only scoring of the game.

The Flames outhit Jamestown 6-5. Megan Garcia and Sydney Griffin both had two hits for CSM, while Mickayla Larsen and Lowther both finished with one.

Garcia went the distance in the circle. She gave up five hits, didn't walk any and struck out four.

"Megan pitched so well," Bray said. "And we made two huge double plays on defense to work out of some jams."

It was more of the same in the second game as Lowther pitched the complete game and CSM made another big double play. Lowther allowed just four hits, walked one and fanned one.

"Our pitchers came out rested after the holiday break and really took command out there in the circle," Bray said. "And our defense made some big plays."

But the bats were possibly the biggest story of the second game as CSM tallied 17 hits.

Garcia led the way with four hits and Macy Homes added three. Kaela Persico, Ethen, Mack Madrigal and Griffin all had two hits each and teammates Kayla Reed and Schewe had one a piece. Reed's hit was a triple, while Homes had two doubles and Persico and Griffin also each had a double.

"Coach (Ryan) Glatter was really working with the hitters today and holding them accountable to making adjustments," Bray said. "We struggled in the first few innings of the day but after that we were solid at the plate.

"Perhaps my favorite play of the game was a perfectly executed suicide bunt with Lowther and Persico that turned out to be the winning run."

The Flames are now 2-8 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and 5-27 overall. CSM is on the road this weekend for games at Briar Cliff University on Friday and Mount Marty on Saturday.
