Flames unable to get much offense going

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The College of Saint Mary softball team never got much going on offense Friday afternoon. The Flames got swept 6-1, 9-0 by Briar Cliff University.

The Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader was originally moved up an hour because of the forecast for Friday night, but then ended up starting later due to rain and a lightning delay during warmups.

"When we finally resumed warmups we just didn't seem to have much energy today," CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "It's frustrating because we were coming off a huge sweep over the University of Jamestown and then we didn't come ready to play today."

The Flames had just five hits the entire day – four in the first game and one in the nightcap.

"Briar Cliff has a strong pitching staff, but I felt like we had prepared," Bray said. "They have two of the top pitchers in the GPAC and we were able to limit our strikeouts, but couldn't get many balls to drop in for hits."

Megan Garcia and Macy Homes both had doubles for CSM in the first game, while teammates Morgan Ethen and Sydney Griffin added singles.

The Flames got their lone run in the third inning when Izzy Monzon walked and then scored from first on Garcia's RBI double.

The Chargers, meanwhile, had four runs in the bottom of the first and another two in the fourth inning.

Garcia took the loss in the circle. She gave up 10 hits, walked one and fanned one.

CSM had just one hit in the second game as Homes broke up the no-hitter with a single in the fourth inning.

Briar Cliff had four runs in the first inning, two in the third and three in the fourth for the run-rule victory. The Chargers had 11 hits.

Daisy Lowther suffered the loss for the Flames. She started the game before being relieved by Kymber Shallenberger and Mickayla Larsen.

"I thought a couple highlights of the day today were the pitching from Kymber and Micki, as well as the work behind the plate from Sydney," Bray said. "We also threw out a couple runners and made some big catches in the outfield.

"But our bats weren't there and we aren't going to win many games without hitting."

The Flames drop to 2-10 in the GPAC and 5-29 overall. CSM was supposed to play at Mount Marty University Saturday, but the games have been postponed due to the forecast.
