Flames edged in pitcher's duel with Dordt

OMAHA, Neb. – It was a pitcher's duel for all seven innings.

The College of Saint Mary softball team battled Dordt University Monday afternoon and suffered a 1-0 loss. The Flames then got beat 14-2 in the nightcap.

"Megan (Garcia) pitched a gem," CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "I feel bad we couldn't get the win for her. She looked so good out there."

Garcia pitched all seven innings and allowed just four hits, walked one and struck out three. Dordt pitcher Abby Kraemer also tossed all seven innings. She gave up just four hits, didn't walk any and struck out three.

The Flames' two hits came from a double by Macy Homes and a single from Garcia.

"We were hitting pretty well," Bray said. "But we had three balls caught on the warning track and a couple hard shots that were hit right at defensive players."

Dordt scored its only run in the top of the first inning with a single, stolen base and double.

"It was honestly a well-played ballgame by both teams," Bray said. "Dordt is always a tough team and we showed we can play with some of the best teams in our conference. Unfortunately, we did not show that in the second game."

The Flames lost the nightcap by the run-rule as Dordt scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second, two in the third and six in the fourth.

CSM scored one run in the third inning and one in the fifth. Mack Madrigal had a solo homer for the Flames' lone run in the third inning. Then CSM scored one in the fifth when Kaela Persico singled to left field, Morgan Ethen reached base on an error, Madrigal hit into a fielder's choice, Alexis Smith singled to advance the runners but Ethen was thrown out trying to score, Mickayla Larsen singled to load the bases and Izzy Monzon singled to score Madrigal.

The Flames finished with seven hits. Larsen had two of them and Monzon, Homes, Persico, Madrigal and Smith all had one each.

The Defenders tallied 13 hits in the game.

Lowther was handed the loss in the circle. She pitched two innings before being relieved by Larsen and Kymber Shallenberger.

CSM drops to 2-16 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and 5-35 overall. Dordt is now 11-5, 30-10.

The Flames return to action Tuesday at home against Concordia University. It will be Senior Day for CSM.
