Home runs give Flames a Senior Day to remember

OMAHA, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary softball team gave its seniors a final home game to remember Tuesday.

The Flames blasted four home runs on the day to defeat Concordia University 10-2 by the run-rule in the opening game and lost the second game 4-2.

"What a day at the ballpark," CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "Our seniors led the way and got us a huge win over Concordia."

The Flames recognized seniors Morgan Ethen, Macy Homes, Mickayla Larsen and Izzy Monzon between games.

Two of the four seniors had home runs – including two in-the-park homers by Monzon. Monzon had one in each game, while Larsen had one in the first game. CSM's other home run came from Daisy Lowther to walk-off the first game.

"Seriously, our ladies were so pumped up," Bray. "For Izzy to get her first collegiate home run on senior day – and then to do it again – you just almost can't believe it."

The Flames outhit Concordia 11-4 in the opening game. Monzon, Homes, Lowther and Savannah Schewe all had two hits each, while Kaela Persico, Larsen and Mack Madrigal finished with one apiece. Besides the three home runs, Madrigal and Schewe had doubles and Homes added a triple.

"We had a great day at the plate," Bray said. "We had hits up and down the lineup in both games."

Megan Garcia pitched the win. She gave up four hits and walked two.

In the second game, Concordia outhit CSM 9-8. Monzon and Larsen both had two hits each, Homes and Lowther both had doubles and Garcia and Sydney Griffin each added a single.

CSM's only two runs came in the first inning, while the Bulldogs had one run in the third, two in the fifth and one in the seventh.

"We obviously wanted to win that game," Bray said. "But both teams played good softball today and, for us, it's great to see us hitting so well, pitching well and playing better defense today."

Garcia started the second game after the shortened first game. She suffered the loss, giving up four hits and walking one. Lowther came on in relief in the fifth inning and allowed five hits and struck out two.

CSM is now 3-17 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and 6-36 overall. The Flames play their season finale on Saturday at Dakota Wesleyan University.

*The Flames also celebrated Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day Tuesday. Senior Day was originally scheduled for last weekend but the game was postponed because of weather.

"We feel a little bad we had to put both events on the same day because both events are really important to us," Bray said. "But our crowd was amazing today and we really appreciated all the faculty and staff that came out to support us. Watching our players run into the stands and hug their teachers is one of my favorite days of the year."
