Season comes to an end for CSM softball

MITCHELL, S.D. – The College of Saint Mary softball team ended its season Saturday with two losses to Dakota Wesleyan University.

The Flames lost the first game 3-2 and then were defeated 3-0 in the second game. CSM ends its season with a 3-19 record in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and a 6-38 overall mark.

"This is not how we wanted to end the season," CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "We did some good things, but a couple defensive mistakes cost us. We thought these were two games we could've won."

The Flames came out swinging Saturday and collected 10 hits in the opening game.

Daisy Lowther, Savannah Schewe and Sydney Griffin all had two hits each, while Izzy Monzon, Megan Garcia, Macy Homes and Kaela Persico had one apiece. One of Schewe's hits was a double.

"We were swinging it really well," Bray said. "The wind was a huge factor today and we had three balls that would've been hit out and were brought back in by the wind."

Bray said the wind was also a factor defensively.

"Both teams struggled adjusting to the wind on defense," Bray said. "I would say we had more trouble than Dakota Wesleyan did and a couple of those plays ended up costing us."

Garcia pitched the complete game for CSM. She gave up seven hits and walked one.

The Flames didn't hit quite as well in the second game. CSM tallied five hits.

Homes led College of Saint Mary with two hits – including a double. Monzon, Griffin and Taylor Hrabik had CSM's other hits.

Lowther was in the circle for the Flames. She pitched all six innings, surrendered nine hits, didn't walk any and struck out three.

"I thought both Megan and Daisy pitched well today," Bray said. "They've both been workhorses for us this year and I appreciate how they've battled out there for us."

Bray said the postgame huddle was emotional for the Flames as the coaches and players reflected on the season. The group also thanked seniors Monzon, Homes, Mickayla Larsen and Morgan Ethen for their dedication to the program.

"There were a lot of tears after the games today," Bray said. "We didn't get as many wins as we were expecting this season but there were still a lot of positives during the year. I really appreciated getting to work with a great group of young ladies.

"We are going to miss the seniors that are graduating and everything that they have done for our program. And we are excited about the returners and the future of CSM softball."
