Home runs lift CSM to big win over Dickinson

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The College of Saint Mary softball team opened the weekend with a big win over Dickinson State Friday.

The Flames defeated the Blue Hawks 5-2 in the first game at the American State Bank Sports Complex, hosted by Dordt University. College of Saint Mary lost 7-1 to Mayville State in the second game.

"We came out ready to go," CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "We scored in the first three innings and were looking really strong at the plate."

Macy Santoni and Savannah Schewe led the Flames as both hit home runs and finished with two hits each. Teammates Megan Garcia and Daisy Lowther also had two hits apiece, while Paige Stuck also had a double.

The Flames outhit Dickinson 9-5 in the contest.

"I was really happy with our performance at the plate," Bray said. "Macy and Sav had big home runs for us, but we were swinging it well up and down the lineup. And we had a lot of good hits that were caught for outs."

Shaylynn Campbell earned her first collegiate win for CSM as she tossed the complete game. She struck out six and walked six.

Bray said a key defensive play in the game came in the bottom of the second inning when Garcia playing right field gunned down a runner at the plate to catcher Sydney Griffin.

"That was a big play for us," Bray said. "And I thought Shay pitched well. She's still been working her way back from injury and she looked better today. She got some big strikeouts for us against a very tough Dickinson lineup."

The Flames did not look as strong offensively in the second game. CSM managed just three hits, while Mayville State had 10 hits.

The Comets came out and scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Mayville added four more runs in the seventh inning to secure the victory.

"We struggled with figuring out what the strike zone was and then how to adjust to it," Bray said. "We never really got comfortable up there. It's definitely giving us a couple things we'll need to work on."

Bray said the biggest highlight of the game was a home run from Stuck. CSM's other two hits came from Griffin and Kayla Reed.

Garcia was tagged with the loss. She struck out three and didn't walk any. Lowther came on in relief and pitched the final 2/3 in the seventh.

"Megan got in a little trouble early on but settled down," Bray said. "I thought Daisy did a great job coming in."

The Flames are now 3-3 on the season and play two more games at the Dordt tournament Saturday. CSM plays Waldorf University at noon and Dakota State University at 4 p.m.
