CSM softball plays well against tough Benedictine squad
ATCHISON, Kan. – College of Saint Mary Softball Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said the Flames had a great day Saturday despite two losses on the road.
The Flames lost 1-0 and 4-2 to Benedictine College in the nonconference doubleheader.
"Benedictine has a strong program and we really came ready to play today," Bray said. "It was great to get in our first games outside and to play so well against a very good program. We actually outhit them today but just couldn't get the timely hits when we needed them.
"Benedictine has an excellent No. 1 starter and she's still undefeated on the season. But I felt like we were prepared for her and we were really disciplined at the plate. We just couldn't string our hits together."
The Ravens scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the sixth as the Flames outhit the home team 5-4.
Megan Garcia led CSM both offensively and defensively. The junior went 2-for-3 at the plate, while teammates Ella Watts, Savannah Schewe and Sydney Griffin added one hit each. Schewe's was a double.
Garcia pitched the complete game four-hitter with no strikeouts and no walks.
"Megan pitched a gem," Bray said. "I couldn't have been happier with her outing. She only threw 59 pitches and was extremely effective. She was a leader out there for us."
Bray said outfielders Kayla Reed, Macy Santoni and Cassie Wiseman also had a great game dealing with some strong winds.
"Our outfield played really well and Sav also had an excellent showing at third base with a diving catch and tough throw on the run," Bray said. "We're obviously disappointed to lose that game, but we have to be pleased with how well we played."
Benedictine scored early in the second game with two runs in the second inning and two more in the fifth. The Flames had one run in the fifth and one in the seventh.
Both teams tallied eight hits in the game, but CSM stranded eight runners compared to Benedictine's five.
Watts and Schewe had two hits each to pace the Flames – including a first collegiate home run for Watts. Garcia and Reed belted doubles, while Daisy Lowther and Santoni had one hit each.
Shaylynn Campbell was tagged with the loss in the circle. She walked one and didn't strike out any.
"We had a couple errors that hurt us and then stranded too many runners," Bray said. "But we're doing a lot of good things and playing good teams like this is giving us great experience."
The Flames are now 5-5 on the season, while Benedictine improves to 13-3. CSM returns to action Friday at Bethany College.
