Flames open Florida trip with sweep

CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 17) -- The College of Saint Mary softball team received a pair of complete games from pitchers Shaylynn Campbell and Megan Garcia to defeat the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and Carleton College to win a pair of games at THE Spring Games.

CSM 4, UW-River Falls 3

Shaylynn Campbell fired a complete game, scattering three runs on six hits.

Hannah Effertz homered to put Wisconsin-River Falls on the board in the top of the second before Campbell helped her own cause with a two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning.

Sydney Griffin scored Paige Stuck with a sac fly to double the CSM lead in the third but Abby Pitts blasted a solo home run for the Falcons in the fourth.

Just a half inning later Ella Watts singled home Campbell for a 4-2 Flames lead.

Johanna Breyen doubled home Tessa Peterson in the seventh but was thrown out at third to end the game as the Flames held on.

CSM 2, Carleton 1

With one win already in the bag, Megan Garcia spun a complete game to complete a double-header sweep. A fourth inning run was the only run she allowed while she sprinkled eight hits across seven innings while her defense provided errorless support.

Grace Colburn struck first for Carleton with a single to plate Adriana Wiggins but Garcia induced a ground ball and harmless pop up to avert further damage.

Genevieve Lyon worked 4.1 scoreless innings in the circle for _ before giving way to Sydney Trentman.

CSM saw five of the first six hitters to face Trentman retired before breaking through in the seventh. Shaylynn Campbell doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a throwing error following Macy Santoni's bunt single. The Flames worked the bases loaded with two outs and Daisy Lowther drew a walk to bring home Santoni with the go-ahead run.

Garcia worked around two hits in the sixth and a pair of two-out knocks in the seventh to secure the win.
