Runs tough to come by as CSM swept at Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- Savannah Schewe went 3-for-5 at the plate but the College of Saint Mary softball team struggled to plate runners in a double-header sweep at the hands of the University of Jamestown in GPAC action on Saturday.

Jamestown improves to 20-9 overall and 6-4 in GPAC play while CSM slides to 7-17 and 0-4 in conference action. The Jimmies won the opener 8-0 in six innings before taking game two by a score of 3-1.

In what has become a trend of late, CSM managed just one run and nine hits with coach Carolyn Todd Bray saying, "our struggles at the plate continued today. We struck out 17 times and seven of those were looking. That is not going to win games. We need to figure out a way to see the ball better at the plate and be more aggressive."

Despite the offensive woes, coach Bray did point to some positives. "We played great defense and only had one error on the day. That's great. I thought our pitchers did well enough to keep us in the games but Jamestown in a great team with a veteran squad. We need to find a way to get things done offensively."

Game One: UJ 8, CSM 0 (6 Innings)

Sunny Halsey (3-0) struck out eight in a complete game, three-hit shutout for Jamestown.

The game was tight early on. Jamestown took a 1-0 lead in the first on a wild pitch but scratched across nothing else until exploding for a four-run fifth.

Trinity Gregg singled in a run in the sixth for the Jimmies and, one batter later, Samarah Martinez came through with a two-run home, game-ending home run.

Singles from Savannah Schewe and Shaylynn Campbell along with a triple from Kayla Reed accounted for CSM's three hits.

Campbell (4-8) took the loss in the circle, allowing five runs on eight hits in 4.1. She struck out three and walked two.

Game Two: UJ 3, CSM 1

A three-run sixth by Jamestown erased a one-run deficit as the Jimmies rallied for a 3-1 win.

Daisy Lowther staked the Flames to an early 1-0 lead. The Flames put runners on the corners with two outs, thanks to singles from Paige Stuck and Sydney Griffin before Lowther singled to right to plate Stuck with the game's first run.

Hope Ransome (7-3) shook off that early run, throwing six shutout innings, allowing just three hits the rest of the way. She struck out nine in a complete game effort.

Megan Garcia (2-9) allowed just a two-out single in the second through five shutout innings before encountering trouble in the sixth.

Jamestown's first three batters reached base before Trinity Gregg tied the game with a single up the middle and Samarah put UJ in front with a bunt that brought in the go-ahead run from third. Kayla Quintanilla added an insurance run for the Jimmies with a run-scoring ground ball.

Up Next:

"We are struggling and battling through some adversity. Still, there has been some progress and I'm looking forward to our upcoming games this week," finished coach Bray. The Flames return home on Tuesday, Apr. 9 for a 3 p.m. GPAC twin-bill against Doane University.
