Flames close out 2024 with 8-3 win over DWU

OMAHA, Neb. -- The College of Saint Mary softball team wrapped up their 2024 season on Saturday with an 8-3 victory over Dakota Wesleyan University in Great Plains Athletic Conference action.

CSM wraps up their season with an overall mark of 11-31 (3-18 GPAC) while DWU finishes the campaign at 18-28 (5-16 GPAC). The teams made it through two innings in game two before the rain started and the remainder of the game was called.

"It was great to end our season with a win," said head coach Carolyn Todd Bray. "We played really well today: we hit great, pitched really well and played solid defense."

"Macy Santoni had an amazing diving catch and doubled off a runner late in the game," said coach Bray before point out a couple of other significant individual performances. "Daisy Lowther had a clutch double with the bases loaded to score three runs. Shaylynn Campbell pitched an excellent game. It was fun to piece it all together."

A big, five-run second inning saw College of Saint Mary recover from an early 1-0 deficit.

Nora Nelson singled home Reagan Grossi with the game's first run in the top of the second for the Tigers.

Savannah Schewe gave the Flames the lead with a two-run single before back-to-back singles from Megan Garcia and Sydney Griffin to score one and two, respectively, saw CSM take a lead and not look back.

Pinch-hitter Macy Moore singled home a pair for DWU in the fourth to cut the lead in half at 5-3.

Santoni added a pair of hits in a 2-for-3 effort.

The Flames answered with a three-run double from Lowther to take an 8-3 lead and create some breathing room.

Campbell (7-17) fired a complete game, allowing just two earned runs (3 total) on seven hits, to pick up the win.

Keirstyn Krcil (9-13) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on four hits and a walk in just 1.2 innings of work.

"It's sad to see the season come to an end because we've been playing really well lately. This team battled through some serious adversity this year and the ladies showed a lot of resilience. I'm proud of them," said Bray, reflecting on the year.
