Flames hammer Viterbo to gain opening-day split

DAVENPORT, Iowa – College of Saint Mary ended the opening day of its 2025 softball season in emphatic fashion Saturday, hammering Viterbo University 10-1 in five innings after opening the day with a 9-3 loss to host St. Ambrose University on day one of the Dome Tournament.

"We did a lot of good things today,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said.

In the Viterbo win, the Flames started quickly, scoring seven runs in the first inning on three hits, four Viterbo walks, an error and four wild pitches. Maycee Hays stroked a two-run single in the inning, while Ella Watts and Amber Kosmicki also delivered RBI singles.

That was more than enough for Shaylynn Campbell and Victoria Placzek, who combined for the win in the circle. Campbell allowed four hits and one earned run in four innings to earn the victory, while Placzek worked a scoreless fifth.

"Shaylynn and Tori both pitched great for us,'' Bray said. "Our hitting was solid all game. It was great to get out to a big 7-0 lead and then keep swinging it well.''

Watts added a solo homer in the third and finished 2-for-2, while Haley Anderson had a two-run double and finished with three RBIs. Cassie Wiseman provided the defensive gem with a nice double play.

"Ella had a big home run for us, and Haley Anderson looked really good offensively, too,'' Bray said. "I'm happy we bounced back and got the win.''

In the opener, St. Ambrose scored in all six of its innings at the plate to steadily pull away from the Flames, but Bray still found plenty of positives.

"We did a lot of good things in the first game,'' she said. "We were really swinging the bat well – especially for our first time live against pitchers other than our own. We made good adjustments at the plate. We had four line-drive outs that were great swings that were just hit right at them. St. Ambrose did what they are good at – which is a great mix of small ball and then timely hits.''

Freshman Maria Perez led CSM offensively with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Campbell went 2 for 4 and added the other RBI.

"It was a great outing for her first collegiate game,'' Bray said of Perez.

CSM is back in action Sunday with two more games in the tournament, meeting Cornerstone (Mich.) University at 8:30 a.m., and then getting a rematch with St. Ambrose at 1 p.m.
