Flames drop pair of one-run decisions

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – College of Saint Marty took a pair of heartbreaking indoor softball losses on Saturday in the Defender/ASB Softball Classic at the American State Bank Sports Complex, falling 2-1 to Ottawa (Kan.) University and 5-4 to Dakota State (S.D.) University.

"We're obviously not happy with the outcomes, but there's no doubt we are better now than we were two days ago,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "We got a lot of great experience this weekend.''

In the opener, CSM (2-6) spoiled an outstanding pitching performance by Shaylynn Campbell, who allowed just four hits and two earned runs in six innings of work. She struck out five and walked one.

"Shay pitched great,'' Bray said. "We played really well. We had so many line-drive outs. We were really swinging it well this game, but we were just hitting it right at them.''

In the fourth inning, Addison Spencer doubled and then Katie Enneking homered to provide enough offense for Ottawa (6-4) to win the game.

CSM scored its run in the third. Ella Watts singled, moved to second on Campbell's single, took third on a fielder's choice and scored on a passed ball. But the Flames couldn't produce any more runs.

In game two, the Flames took a 4-3 lead into the fifth after Makenna Earnest singled and eventually scored on Campbell's single. However, the Trojans (3-8) tied it in the fifth and then went ahead in the top of the seventh on Katie Hansen's RBI single.

In the bottom of the seventh, CSM threatened. Campbell led off with a single and then Amber Kosmicki reached on an error before Maria Perez lined out to center. The Trojans escaped by turning ground balls into forceouts on the next two batters to end it.

Campbell was 4 for 4 in game two with an RBI, while Watts finished with a double and two RBIs, and Earnest went 2 for 2.

"Makenna Earnest had a great game for us with a couple hits and some clutch baserunning,'' Bray said. "Kayla Reed made an excellent catch in the outfield. And all of our pitchers and catchers did well. We caught three players this game and pitched four pitchers. That experience will help us down the road.''

CSM is off until March 5, when it plays the first two of its seven games in a five-day stretch in Alabama at Mobile and Gulf Shores.
