Flames drop pair to Mount Marty

OMAHA, Neb. – A seventh-inning rally in the opener of Wednesday's Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader came up just short for College of Saint Mary, and Mount Marty University rode that momentum to a sweep.

The Lancers held off CSM for a 3-2 victory in game one, then posted an 11-4 win to leave town with a pair of road triumphs.

"We felt like we missed the opportunity to get wins today,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "In the first game, Mount Marty came out swinging well and then Shay (Campbell) contained them. We were the opposite – took too long to get our bats going.''

The Lancers (14-16, 5-7) scored single runs in the first two innings of the opener, but Campbell and her defense showed an uncanny ability to avoid the big inning. She allowed 12 hits but just three earned runs in the complete-game effort, striking out three and walking none.

That allowed the Flames to battle back, and they did so in the seventh. Down 3-0 and with one gone, CSM reached on back-to-back errors, then moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Amber Kosmicki delivered a two-run single to center to make it a 3-2 game. However, McKenzie Gray struck out her 10th and 11th batters of the game to end it.

Makenna Earnest was 2 for 2 in the opener with a walk, and Haley Anderson had the only extra-base hit with a double. Catcher Maycee Hays threw out two runners trying to steal second, "so that was a positive,'' Bray said.

In game two, CSM committed four errors, including two in the third inning that helped Mount Marty plate six runs and turn a 3-2 lead into a 9-2 advantage.

Of the 11 runs Megan Garcia allowed, only three were earned.

"Megan pitched well – especially after being sick – but we didn't play good defense behind her,'' Bray said. "Our bats were much better in the second game.''

Indeed, CSM matched the Lancers with 13 hits. Maria Perez was 3 for 3 with an RBI. Campbell, Garcia and Anderson each provided two hits, with Campbell and Garcia each driving in a run. Earnest was 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI.

The Flames return to action Thursday at Nebraska Wesleyan University. First pitch for the varsity game is 4 p.m. at the Sandhills Global Youth Complex, with a JV game to follow.

"It gives us an opportunity to improve on all areas of the game,'' Bray said. "We're battling some sickness that is going through the team, and it is giving other people chances to step up.''
