Flames’ defense struggles in losses
OMAHA, Neb. – On a difficult day for pitchers, College of the Saint Mary didn't offer enough defensive support for theirs.
The Flames committed nine errors in the doubleheader to Midland University, dropping the Great Plains Athletic Conference games by scores of 12-6 and 23-7 (5 innings) Monday on Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day at the CSM softball complex.
"We did not play good softball today,'' CSM Coach Carolyn Todd Bray said. "It was another day of not putting all of the pieces together. Normally, I'd be happy to score 13 runs off Midland, but our pitching and defense weren't enough to support our offense today.''
With gale-force winds blowing out throughout the two games, Midland improved to 30-11 overall and 12-2 in the GPAC, while CSM dropped to 7-28, 5-13.
In the opener, the Warriors jumped out to a 6-0 lead after an inning and a half and never looked back. For CSM, Macy Santoni led the way with a 2-for-3 day that included a two-run homer and three total RBIs. Amber Kosmicki went 3 for 4, Maycee Hays was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Makenna Earnest went 2 for 3.
In game two, things looked promising for the Flames after they produced a six-run bottom of the third that cut the Midland lead to 8-6. Kosmicki laced a two-run double in the inning and Megan Garcia later followed with a three-run double. Haley Anderson followed Garcia with a run-scoring single, and suddenly it was a two-run game.
But that set the stage for a forgettable top of the fourth, when Midland scored 14 runs on 10 hits with the aid of four Flames errors.
Reese Floro swung the hot bat for Midland all day, going 8 for 10 with four doubles, four RBIs and eight runs scored.
Garcia finished the second game 2 for 2 with the three RBIs for CSM, while Victoria Placzek also drove in a run.
In addition to Santoni's big home run in the opener, Bray noted diving plays on defense by Earnest and Shaylynn Campbell, along with pinch hits by Kayla Kitzman, Lindsay Ohnoutka and Placzek in the doubleheader.
"We need to shake these losses off quickly, with Waldorf coming to town tomorrow for two big GPAC games,'' Bray said.
Game times with Waldorf are set for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
