Hot shooting powers Doane past CSM

OMAHA, Neb. – Doane University rode hot shooting and stingy defense to an 85-34 Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball win over College of Saint Mary Tuesday at the Lied Fitness Center.

The Tigers (4-1 overall, 2-1 GPAC) shot 61.8% (34 of 55) from 2-point range in the game and 54.3% (38 of 70) on all field goals.

Meanwhile, the Flames (1-6, 0-4) never got untracked offensively against Doane's active defense. CSM made just 17.2% (10 of 58) from the field, including 8.7% (2 of 23) from 3-point range.

The Flames have some time off due to the Thanksgiving break, and Coach Natalie Miller hopes her team uses it to reset and come back with renewed desire to improve.

"We're going into halftime saying the same things,'' she said. "We're coming out of the game saying the same things. I told them, 'Over these next few days I want us to feel the loss enough that it forces us to change.'''

CSM trailed just 33-19 with 4:46 left in the first half after Jazmyne Villalobos made a driving basket. However, the Tigers went on a 15-1 run to close the half with a 48-20 lead. Doane scored the first 12 points of the third quarter, allowing it to play its reserves for a large portion of the second half.

Madelyn Gaughen led CSM with nine points, four rebounds and two steals, hitting 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. Villalobos added eight points and four rebounds.

Doane enjoyed a 54-32 rebounding advantage.

CSM returns to action Dec. 4 with a 6 p.m. GPAC game at Hastings.
