Quick-starting Doane runs past CSM

CRETE, Neb. – Another quick-starting opponent spelled trouble on Wednesday night for the College of Saint Mary basketball team.

Doane University shot 11 of 17 (64.7%) in the first quarter, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range, to race to a 31-7 lead after 10 minutes. The Tigers went on to post a 102-49 Great Plains Athletic Conference victory at the Haddix Center.

"They had some transition pushes that hurt us,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "Overall, we just struggled with our ability to guard. They kept getting downhill and we had a lot of silly fouls.''

Doane (14-9 overall, 9-8 GPAC) placed all five starters in double figures, led by Maddie Portwine's 29 points and four steals. The Tigers stretched their lead to 60-18 at the half.

CSM (1-23, 0-18) again struggled in the turnover and rebounding categories. The Flames coughed it up 26 times, 10 more than their opponent, and were doubled up on the boards, 42-21.

For CSM, Madelyn Gaughen led the way with 16 points and three steals, hitting 6 of 10 from the field. Jazmyne Villalobos added 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

Miller also praised the play of Freda Moore, who added eight points.

"Freda did a fantastic job of playing hard and keeping our energy up,'' Miller said. "She did a great job on defense, talking and being aggressive.''

Three of the Flames' four remaining games are at home, starting with Saturday's 2 p.m. GPAC matchup with Waldorf University.
