Slow start hampers Flames in loss

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – A slow shooting start spelled trouble for the College of the Saint Mary basketball team on Saturday afternoon.

The Flames made just 2 of 12 (16.7) from the field in the opening 10 minutes, and Morningside University sped away with a 26-6 lead after one quarter en route to a 104-50 Great Plains Athletic Conference win at the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.

"They pressed and played zone most of the game, which made it tough for us to get into a rhythm offensively,'' CSM Coach Natalie Miller said. "We didn't get downhill enough, which is reflected in our free-throw attempts.''

The Flames (1-25 overall, 0-22 GPAC) shot just six free throws in the game, all in the fourth quarter. Morningside (12-14, 10-10) also dominated the boards, outrebounding CSM 58-28, including 22-3 on the offensive glass.

College of Saint Mary played a solid second quarter, as it was outscored just 21-20 behind Ella Klusman's seven points in the period. But the slow start was too much to overcome.

Madelyn Gaughen led CSM with 16 points, hitting 7 of 14 from the field, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range. Klusman added 10 points, while Haley Debuse led in rebounds (6), assists (5) and blocks (2).

Lily Vollertsen led Morningside with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

"Defensively, we didn't box out very well and we didn't help the helper well,'' Miller said.

The Flames have two games remaining, both at home: Wednesday at 6 p.m. vs. Mount Marty and Saturday vs. Midland at 2 p.m.
