CSM soccer defeats York 2-1

YORK, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary soccer team will be heading into conference play next week with an undefeated season after beating York University Saturday.

The Flames defeated York 2-1 in nonconference play and now has a 2-0-2 record on the season.

"I'm really proud of how today finished," CSM Coach Jordan Irsik said. "The elements and the atmosphere were anything but ideal, but we took care of the moments when we needed to.

"We pushed a different style with the heat today so our shot opportunities were very solid, while defensively we forced them to settle for the opportunities we gave them. That is the kind of composure you see when our team is confident."

Katie Harold scored CSM's first goal at 8:41 with an assist from Camila Munoz.

"Camila played a through ball to Katie that she put a one-touch rocket into the back side netting from 30' out," Irsik said.

The Flames went into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.

CSM went up by two goals when Marissa Ring scored at 58:58 with assists from Harold and Abbie Anderson.

"Kylie (Anderson) held up play and let us build numbers and then dropped it to Abbie," Irsik said. "Abbie slotted a through ball that nicked off Katie to Marissa for a finish."

The Flames gave up a late goal at 83:13 when Gracie Reynolds netted an unassisted shot.

"Their goal was unfortunate," Irsik said. 'With a two-goal lead, we were able to get some different players in and we just had a mental lapse that gave up and unearned goal. That's part of the game and we'll get better because of it."

York outshot the Flames 13-5 in the contest. CSM keeper Alivia Schade finished with five saves in net.

The Flames resume play Wednesday with a home contest vs. Northwestern College. The GPAC game starts at 3 p.m.

"We're excited that we're entering conference play this week with an undefeated record," Irsik said. "They have handled a ton of adversity. Hopefully with a few more people back starting this week we can keep building on this foundation."
