CSM soccer handed first loss of the season

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The College of Saint Mary soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday. The Flames were defeated 5-1 by Dordt University.

CSM is now 1-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and 3-1-2 overall.

"Unfortunately, today was just not our day," CSM Coach Jordan Irsik said. "We got off to a slow start and that is hard to dig out of. Dordt is a very direct team and we struggled with it. We just couldn't find our rhythm. Adding to that we had an injury and were already missing a few people. We put ourselves in an uphill battle."

Dordt scored two goals in the opening half and then another three in the second half to go ahead 5-0. CSM's lone goal came in the final minutes when Abby Ridout scored at 87:32 with an assist from Libbie Brezenski.

"Our goal was nice," Irsik said. "Lesli (Donis) crossed the ball in and there was a scramble in the box that Libbie played out to Abby Ridout. And Abby scored."

Dordt outshot the Flames 18-6 in the contest. Alivia Schade had six saves in net for CSM.

"I'm most proud of the fact that we never stopped fighting," Irsik said. "Our team confidence is still very high. We had opportunities to add a few goals on our side."

The Flames are off until Wednesday when they play host to Mount Marty University at 4 p.m.
