Flames lose season opener to Jamestown

OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary Soccer Coach Jamison Parkhill is hoping his team gained valuable experience Sunday in the Flames' season opener.

University of Jamestown defeated CSM 2-0 in the nonconference opener at home.

"We gained valuable experience for a lot of our younger players in their first collegiate game," Parkhill said. "What we are now is not what we're going to be in a month from now or in October. So I'm excited we got some valuable minutes today and I'm excited for our future.

"Another positive was that when we were doing what we were supposed to be doing today –  we looked good."

Jamestown controlled most of the game. The Jimmies outshot CSM 8-1 in the first half but didn't have anything to show for it as the score was 0-0 at the intermission.

Jamestown didn't waste any time in the second half, however. The Jimmies scored just 22 seconds in when Alyssa Caton found the low right corner of the back of the net off an assist from Bre Oettle.

The visitors stretched their lead to 2-0 at 62:02 when Eve Hoppe scored from Oettle.

"We have to be better in defensive transition and we need to be better in the moments after we go down a goal," Parkhill said. "We need to trust that there is still plenty of game left to play and the game is not over."

The Jimmies outshot CSM 16-3 in the contest. The Flames' best scoring chance game in the first half when Marissa Ring missed just high on a header.

Alivia Schade made eight saves in net for the Flames. She had two back-to-back saves in the middle of the second half that were crucial.

"Alivia was massive today," Parkhill said. "She kept us in the game and was fantastic. Her senior leadership and calming presence is huge for us."

Isa Garcia got the win for the Jimmies. She was in net for just over 83 minutes before being relieved by Allyson Johnson.

The Flames (0-1) return to action at 5 p.m. Friday on the road at Tabor College.
