Flames remain perfect in GPAC soccer play
OMAHA, Neb. – On Sept. 8, the College of Saint Mary soccer team had played five matches resulting in zero victories.
Less than three weeks later, the Flames have dramatically changed their fortunes.
CSM extended its win streak to four matches and improved to 3-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference with a workmanlike 4-0 home victory over Mount Marty.
"Overall, we're just happy to be sitting at 3-0 in the GPAC,'' CSM Coach Jamison Parkhill said. "At the end of the day, what matters is the result and we got the three points that we needed. We know that we can play better.''
Aubrey Vancura posted the only goal of the first half in the 29th minute on a penalty kick after Libbie Brezenski was fouled in the box. The Flames added second-half goals by Kaitlin Smith (46'), Marissa Ring (53') and Bella Olsen (62'). Abbie Anderson and Camila Muñoz had two assists, while Ella Klusman and Abby Ostergaard added one each in the balanced attack.
"We don't look to just one person to create,'' Parkhill said. "We want a team dynamic that creates our shots for us and creates our goals.''
Ring finished with eight shots in an active effort.
"She was very, very dangerous on that wing, just taking players on, getting into the box,'' Parkhill said.
CSM outshot Mount Marty (4-4-1, 1-2-0) 23-4 and held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks, as Alivia Schade earned the clean sheet in goal.
But it's never perfect.
"The really glaring thing would be the 10 offsides,'' Parkhill said. "That's just not acceptable.''
The Flames will try to remain unbeaten in GPAC play on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Northwestern.
