OMAHA, Neb. – Marissa Ring was fouled in the box in the 86th minute and Ella Klusman knocked in the penalty kick to give College of Saint Mary a hard-fought 1-1 soccer tie with Doane on Wednesday.
It was the third draw of the season for both clubs, with CSM moving to 5-4-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, and Doane moving to 4-6-3 and 2-1-3.
The Flames outshot their opponent 11-5 and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. They connected a variety of passes in the midfield, but weren't always able to translate them into quality looks.
"We weren't attacking very well today,'' CSM Coach Jamison Parkhill said. "We had the ball the majority of the time. Just a lot of useless possessions that didn't end in good opportunities.''
Doane opened the scoring in the 16th minute when McKenna Rathbun connected from the left wing for an unassisted goal.
On an unseasonably warm day, it stayed that way until Ring was fouled in the box, allowing Klusman to deliver the equalizer.
Parkhill gave his team credit for hanging in there, with several key contributors out with injuries.
"We're banged up, but at the end of the day we have to show our quality and we have to fight through it,'' he said.
One of the players thrust into heavy minutes was defender Vanessa Duncan, a junior from Puyallup, Wash.
"I want to give a shout-out to Vanessa Duncan,'' Parkhill said. "First collegiate start. She shut it down. Being put into that moment was huge for her, and I thought she did very, very well.''
CSM returns to action Saturday with a 2 p.m. GPAC match in Sioux Center against Dordt.
