SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – College of Saint Mary scored the match's first two goals, but ultimately couldn't solve Dordt University scoring whiz Karinna Tel.
Tel scored five unanswered goals to dig her team out of the hole, as the Defenders rallied past the Flames 5-2 Saturday in Great Plains Athletic Conference soccer action.
"We didn't have an answer for Tel,'' CSM Coach Jamison Parkhill said. "She made us pay for our mistakes. We knew what they wanted to do but couldn't find the solution.''
Tel's outburst was the second-most in a match in school history. She has 23 goals on the season and 61 for her career, which is four away from Kalie Gaskill's career mark at the school.
Dordt improved to 9-2-1 overall, 5-1-1 in GPAC play and has 16 points, which is second in the league. CSM dropped to 5-5-3 and 4-2-1, and has 13 points, third in the GPAC standings.
The Flames opened the scoring in the eighth minute on a beautiful goal by Kylie Anderson. Marissa Ring sent a cross to Ella Klusman, who touched it out to Anderson on the right wing. Klusman made a penalty kick in the 21st minute for a 2-0 lead after Camila Muñoz was fouled in the box.
That set the stage for Tel, who scored in the 25th, 37th, 45th, 48th and 56th minutes.
"We thought being up 2-0 was good enough, and we took our foot off the gas,'' Parkhill said. "Kylie Anderson had a great game and she gave everything for 90 minutes.
"Our problems are all fixable and we have to be willing to fix them. We have the quality. We just need to believe and do the work, because being successful isn't easy. It takes hard work and dedication.''
CSM returns to action Thursday at 3 p.m. with a home match against Jamestown.
