Concordia strikes early, blanks Flames

SEWARD, Neb. – A slow start doomed the College of Saint Mary soccer team on Wednesday.

Concordia University scored four times in the first 42 minutes and went on to blank the Flames 4-0 in Great Plains Athletic Conference action.

"We were not very competitive in the first half,'' CSM Assistant Coach Ed Meitzen said. "We failed to pressure the ball. We made some halftime adjustments that allowed us more time on the ball and we were able to create more chances.''

The Bulldogs (9-5-1, 6-3-0 GPAC) scored in the second minute to put CSM (5-8-3, 4-4-1) in a hole early. The hosts added goals in the 23rd, 28th and 42nd minutes, getting a goal and three assists from Kierstynn Garner.

The Flames were outshot 13-5, although they did manage five corner kicks to Concordia's three. Kaitlin Smith led CSM with two shot attempts.

College of Saint Mary has two more chances to improve its GPAC Tournament positioning. It returns home for Senior Day on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Midland. It closes the regular season on Oct. 30 at league leader Hastings.
