Flames blank Midland, punch ticket to GPAC Tournament

OMAHA, Neb. – As far as regular-season home soccer finales go, College of Saint Mary Coach Jamison Parkhill admitted he couldn't have drawn up Saturday any better. He watched his team:

  • Notch an important 3-0 Great Plains Athletic Conference victory over rival Midland University.
  • Clinch a spot in the eight-team GPAC Tournament.
  • Record a Senior Day performance his 14 seniors won't soon forget.

With its first win in 28 days, CSM (6-8-3 overall, 5-4-1 GPAC) ended a four-match losing streak and a six-match winless streak, sending everyone home with wide smiles on their faces.

"Doing it for the 14 seniors and beating a rival in Midland, especially after the four-game skid that we've had, was massive for us,'' Parkhill said. "Midland has gotten some very good results against teams above us. It shows that hey, this is what we are actually capable of, going into the postseason.''

The 14 seniors honored were Abbie Anderson, Kylie Anderson, Bella Cain, Taylor Kruse, Camila Muñoz, Katalina Petak, Madalynn Rhodes, Alivia Schade, Paola Servin-Ramirez, Jessica Slater, Kaitlin Smith, Lexi Smith, Aubrey Vancura and Delsie Westbrook.

Ella Klusman opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, lofting a high-arching shot with her left foot over the keeper from long range off an assist from Abbie Anderson.

"Her confidence has been kind of up and down, so for her to be able to get that goal reminds her that she's good enough,'' Parkhill said.

One minute and 35 seconds later, Abby Ridout stole the ball and fed Marissa Ring, who buried one from the left wing to make it 2-0.

It stayed that way until the 82nd minute, when Libbie Brezenski was fouled in the box. Vancura made the penalty kick for the final goal of the match.

CSM outshot the Warriors (4-3-3, 4-3-3) 8-0 in the first half, playing one of its best halves of the season.

"They're very a dangerous team, so to be able to hold them to zero shots in the first half is huge,'' Parkhill said.

The Flames coach singled out the play of left back Lesli Donis.

"I thought she had a fantastic game today, getting up and down the pitch and shutting down a lot of attacks,'' Parkhill said.

Senior keepers Schade and Rhodes combined for the clean sheet, denying 12 second-half shots.

CSM concludes its regular season Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. match at Hastings College.
