HASTINGS, Neb. – The College of Saint Mary soccer team went on the road and battled to an impressive 2-2 tie with league-leading Hastings College Wednesday night. It was the regular season finale for both teams.
"It was a fun game to watch and be a fan of because each team battled all game long," CSM Coach Jamison Parkhill said. "We both had chances to win."
The Flames clinched seventh place in the GPAC regular season standings with a record of 5-4-2 and 17 points. CSM is 6-8-4 overall. Hastings won the regular season title with a conference record of 8-0-3 and 27 points.
College of Saint Mary will advance to the GPAC Postseason Tournament Saturday and will play at No.2-seeded Concordia University at 7 p.m.
The Flames will use Wednesday's strong game against the top team as a springboard for the playoffs.
"I'm proud of the ladies," Parkhill said. "It was an entire team effort from our starters, to our subs and to our bench. Everyone was locked in and we showed resilience today."
Hastings scored first in the 7th minute when Madison Rhodes knocked one past CSM goalkeeper Alivia Schade. Allison Seery earned the assist.
The Flames answered back at 11:36 when Marissa Ring found the far left corner of the net off an assist from Abbie Anderson.
Play was locked at 1-1 for a long time before Millie Gell scored for Hastings at 73:38, assisted by Megan Lampe.
The Flames continued to battle and Aubrey Vancura took advantage of a penalty kick to score at 75:43.
Schade finished with five saves in the tie. Hastings keeper Tatiana Villasenior had one save.
Hastings will advance to the NAIA National Women's Soccer National Championship Opening Round. The winner of the GPAC Postseason Tournament will earn the conference's second automatic bid.
