Flames swimmers fare well in Kansas

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – College of Saint Mary took a small but mighty swim contingent to compete in the Sterling College Triangular on Friday and brought home some impressive results.

The University of Saint Mary of Leavenworth, Kan., won the triangular with 115 points, followed by CSM with 50 and Sterling with 15.

"Flames swim is coming off two weeks of winter training, swimming more yards in the last 15 days than at any other time this season,'' CSM Coach Liz Germonprez said. "Today we brought a small travel team to race in Kansas. For the most part, we swam off-events and treated today as our final day of winter training.''

Kylee Brown and Hannah Steinmetz led the Flames on the day. Brown won the 200 individual medley in 2:20.09, and in her first time swimming the 100 backstroke in a meet, she also took first in 1:07.45.

Steinmetz made it a 1-2 finish in the backstroke, finishing second behind Brown in 1:08.83, and Steinmetz also grabbed third in the 200 IM in a personal-best 2:36.47.

Jaidyn Vanschoiack swam a personal-best in the 200 freestyle, placing fourth in 2:15.89, and Naomi Huttenga swam a personal-best in the 100 backstroke, taking sixth in 1:14.06.

Germonprez said two freshmen had first-time big swims: Isabella Promes in the 1,000 freestyle, where she placed fourth (12:35.77), and Kylee Farson in the 200 IM, where she ended fifth (2:42.63).

There were three other runner-up finishes for the Flames: Chloe Hale in the 100 butterfly (1:11.17), Cailyn Nielsen in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.92), and the 200 medley relay team of Vanschoiack, Huttenga, Brown and Steinmetz (2:02.55).
