Talented Asbury squad handles CSM netters
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – College of Saint Mary opened its spring tennis season Wednesday with a 7-0 loss to a talented Asbury (Ky.) University squad at the Hilton Head Island Beach & Tennis Resort.
"While the scoreboard states otherwise, we had a decent showing against a stronger team,'' CSM Coach Mike Johnson said. "It was great practice heading into Thursday's match, and great to get some desperately needed match play.''
Johnson said two of the better matches came at Nos. 2 and 3 singles. At No. 2 singles, Ali Zegarra beat Yana Gupta 6-0, 6-0, and at No. 3 singles Martina Paillet battled past Carolyna Truong 6-3, 6-3.
"We played some good tennis at 2 and 3 singles,'' Johnson said. "Even though the score at 2 looks like a blowout, there were close points.''
At No. 1 singles, Katherine Nova beat Iyaanah Pardiwalla 6-0, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, Megan Moore beat Miranda Swanson 6-0, 6-0. And at No. 5 singles, Mikaela West beat Darece Van Auken 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 1 doubles, Paillet and Nova beat Truong and Swanson, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Zegarra and Mabry Watkins beat Pardiwalla and Van Auken, 6-1.
