Van Auken’s effort highlights Flames’ triumph
YANKTON, S.D. – Highlighted by Darece Van Auken's win at No. 5 singles, visiting College of Saint Mary dominated the singles play en route to an impressive 5-2 Great Plains Athletic Conference tennis victory over Mount Marty University on Sunday.
Van Auken defeated Alessandra Lopez 7-5, 6-1. Van Auken won five of the nine deuce points in a tightly contested first set, then won the second set decisively.
"That was a fantastic win,'' CSM Coach Mike Johnson said. "Darece played with focus and discipline, and followed her plan to a victory. Great stuff.''
Both teams had just five players in action, so each of the singles and doubles matches counted for a point. The Flames won four of the five singles matches.
At No. 1, Iyaanah Pardiwalla of CSM beat Maria Azul Medina Lobos 6-2, 6-3. At No. 3 Carolyna Truong of CSM downed Alexandra Salazar 6-1, 6-1. And at No. 4, Miranda Swanson of CSM handled Camila Lopez 6-4, 6-1. Maria Luisa de Lama of Mount Marty beat Yana Gupta 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2.
At No. 1 doubles, Azul Medina Lobos and Luisa de Lama beat Pardiwalla and Gupta, 6-4. And at No. 2 doubles, Truong and Swanson beat Salazar and Alessandra Lopez, 6-1.
The victory moves CSM to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in GPAC play this spring, while Mount Marty falls to 2-6, 0-4.
The Flames are back in action on Saturday at home in a 2 p.m. GPAC match against Hastings College at the CSM courts.
