Flames fall, but Swanson notches big win on Senior Day

OMAHA, Neb. – Doane University controlled most of the action on Monday, defeating College of Saint Mary 6-1 in a Great Plains Athletic Conference tennis dual at Genesis Westroads.

The highlight of the day came at No. 4 singles, where senior Miranda Swanson outfought Isabella Castillero 6-4, 6-2.

"Great playing from Miranda in front of family and friends on Senior Day!'' CSM Coach Mike Johnson said. "Miranda really hit through the ball today and put pressure on her opponent. This was her best singles match of the year, not just because of the win, but because of how she handled herself on court. It was great to see.''

Doane won the other four contested singles matches. At No. 1, Maria Purizaca beat Iyaanah Pardiwalla 6-3, 6-1. At No. 2, Mariana Espinosa edged Yana Gupta 4-6, 6-4, 10-5. At No. 3, Liz Calderon got past Carolyna Truong 6-0, 6-2. And at No. 5, Kat Johnson downed Darece Van Auken 6-2, 6-1.

The Tigers also won both of the doubles matches. At No. 1, Purizaca and Espinosa beat Pardiwalla and Gupta 6-0, and at No. 2, Calderon and Grace Schroller beat Truong and Swanson, 6-2.

The Flames forfeited No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

After the match, the Flames honored their two seniors, Swanson and manager Francesca Farwell, for their tremendous contributions to the program.
