Flames continue progress at Doane

CRETE, Neb. – College of Saint Mary turned in another strong performance on Saturday in the Fred Beile Classic indoor track meet at the Fuhrer Fieldhouse on the campus of Doane University.

"Our fans and followers will start to get bored with the comment that our growth is amazing – but it is,'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon Jr. said. "We had 29 personal bests today, and a few program records.''

The Flames earned two individual event titles among 10 top-three finishes. In the 800 meters, Olivia Elbert took top honors with a time of 2:24.09, while Kara Muller claimed the mile in 5:28.78.

Leading a group of five runner-up efforts by the Flames was Claire Caspersen in the shot put. She reached the NAIA A-standard with her runner-up toss of 14.21 meters (46 feet, 7½ inches).

Freshman Becka Karnik accounted for a pair of seconds, in the mile (5:36.94) and 3,000 (11:18.98), running a 17-second personal best in the longer event. Muller added a second in the 800 (2:26.05) and Carly Henderson took second in the 1,000 in a program-record 3:13.81.

There were three more third-place finishes by CSM athletes: Savannah Horne in the 200 with a program-record 26.59, Josie Karnik in the 800 (2:32.79) and Mikaiya Rodgers in the long jump (5.27, 17-3½).

"Because we are a program geared towards development, we feel we can continue this theme of young athletes coming to CSM to find big improvements in their performances,'' Gordon said.
