SEWARD, Neb. – Freshman Kara Muller's victory in the 3,000 meters highlighted some excellent performances by the College of Saint Mary on Friday in the Concordia University Indoor Invitational at Bulldog Fieldhouse.
Muller beat a field of 17 for her victory, clocking 10:54.93, just more than six seconds ahead of runner-up Kari Mathsen of Nebraska Wesleyan.
Also Friday, the Flames had three athletes in action at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational in Lincoln. In the long jump, Mikaiya Rodgers placed ninth at 5.21 (17-1¼) and Kellesse Heard was 10th at 5.08 (16-8). In the 60 prelims, Savannah Horne was 15th (7.98) and Heard was 16th (8.01).
Back at Seward, the Flames also won the 4 x 800 relay, although they were the only entry in the field. Mira Fosmer, Carly Henderson, Muller and Olivia Elbert finished in 9:35.88, which meets the B-standard as a national qualifier. It's also a program record and currently ranks sixth in the nation.
Two other freshmen, the Karnik twins, were responsible for a pair of runner-up efforts. Josie Karnik placed second in the 800 (2:28.54) and Becka Karnik ended second in the mile (5:35.17).
Three Flames picked up individual thirds: Henderson in the 1,000 (3:09.29), Elbert in the 600 (1:41.16) and Corinne Mead in the mile (5:35.82).
Becka Karnik added a fourth in the 3,000 (11:19.50) to her outstanding day, while Kiley Craft placed fifth in the mile (5:43.19) and Allison Isaacson was sixth in the triple jump (10.97 meters; 36 feet). Isaacson's mark is a program record and personal best, and ranks her 41st in the nation.
