Flames place 12th in 4x800 relay
MARION, Ind. – College of Saint Mary's dreams of reaching Thursday's 4x800-meter relay final at the NAIA Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships fell just short on Wednesday.
The Flames placed in the 12th of the 27 entries in the relay in 9:28.35, and only the top nine advanced to Thursday's final. Freshman Carly Henderson ran 2:21.4 for 800 meters on the leadoff leg and was followed by freshman Olivia Elbert (2:18.7), sophomore Mira Fosmer (2:22.4) and freshman Kara Muller (2:25.6).
To say weather conditions were less than ideal would be an understatement.
"Fifty degrees, driving rain and 25 mph winds,'' CSM Coach Steve Gordon Jr. said. "There was no worse weather to run for this time of year. But they kept in good spirits, tied them up and ran their hearts out! We are so proud of these ladies! Twelfth in the nation is an incredible accomplishment.''
The meet, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University, continues Thursday, and the Flames will be represented by senior Claire Caspersen in the shot put at noon Central time. The entire meet can be viewed online for free at naianetwork.com
