Runs in first two sets propel Mustangs past CSM

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Morningside used a pair of 7-1 runs to take control of Saturday's Great Plains Athletic Conference volleyball match with College of Saint Mary.

The Mustangs rode those surges to a 25-21, 25-18, 25-22 sweep of the Flames at the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.

"Offensive woes killed us today,'' CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "We should have won a couple sets in this match, but giving up big point runs killed us.''

Morningside's first 7-1 run came with the Flames leading 20-18 in the opening set, allowing the hosts to close out the opener. In the second set, CSM held leads of 5-1, 8-4 and 10-7, but the Mustangs' 7-1 run put them in front 14-11, and the visitors never recovered.

College of Saint Mary (12-9 overall, 3-5 GPAC) threatened to take it to a fourth set, trailing just 18-16, 21-19, 22-20 and 24-22 in set three, but it couldn't find the rally to extend the match.

The Flames hit just .026 in the match, with 29 kills and 26 errors. Morningside (17-6, 5-3) hit .202. Pruett called Azaria Green the "only bright spot'' for CSM with nine kills and a .240 hitting efficiency, while Morgan Ramsey added six kills and hit .200.

Haley Bedlan had two ace serves while Miranda Ring handed out a team-high 16 assists. Elen Pruett made 14 digs with Caitlin McCormack adding nine.

College of Saint Mary returns to action Friday night at 7:30 with a home GPAC match against Northwestern.
