Flames power past Dordt in 4
OMAHA, Neb. – Despite dropping a straight-set volleyball decision to top-rated Northwestern College on Friday, the College of Saint Mary felt it found plenty of positive play to carry into Saturday's match with Dordt University.
The Flames were correct.
Graduate student Liz Henrichson smacked a team-high 11 kills to go with seven block assists, and CSM notched an important 25-15, 18-25, 25-13, 25-18 Great Plains Athletic Conference victory over the Defenders at the Lied Fitness Center.
Flames Coach Rick Pruett said it "absolutely'' capped his team's best two-match stretch of the season.
"We've just been focusing on playing hard all of the time,'' he said. "Sometimes the switch comes on and sometimes it goes off. It's about the consistency. It's nice to see that for two matches in a row. Although we split, we played with some energy and some fight. We didn't let a team come back and beat us when we had the opportunity to finish.''
The Flames improved to 13-10 overall and 4-6 in conference play, while Dordt dropped to 12-9 and 6-4.
The 5-foot-10 Henrichson was an All-American in the middle two years ago, but is now thriving after a move to the right side.
"Liz really sees the court well,'' Pruett said. "She has a lot of shots, is physical and brings energy.''
After the teams split the first two sets, the third set was deadlocked at 22 before Azaria Green notched a kill and teamed with Henrichson for a block to make it 24-22, Flames. Two points later, Green slammed another kill for a two-sets-to-one lead.
In the fourth, CSM ran off six straight points to turn a 6-4 lead into a 12-4 bulge. Madisyn Havermann had two kills during the run. The Flames cruised from there to close out the 101-minute match.
Green recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 block assists, while Havermann added eight kills and a sizzling .467 kill efficiency.
Miranda Ring had 25 assists and Kaitlyn Busby added 19. Krissy Radicia and Elen Pruett led the back row with 18 and 11 digs, respectively.
"Everybody played to their potential and it was good to see,'' Pruett said.
The only down note came late in the second set when Morgan Ramsey went down with a knee injury. Her status is uncertain, Pruett said.
"Morgan's a rock for this team,'' he said. "She's such a great leader and always works hard and puts in that effort. The girls talked about rallying around her. Using that as a motivation, not as a way to drop your heads and feel sorry.''
The Flames return to action Wednesday at home with a 7:30 p.m. GPAC match against Concordia.
*CSM dropped the junior varsity match 22-25, 25-23, 15-7.
