Flames find a way to get it done vs. Mount Marty

OMAHA, Neb. – It took five sets, but the College of Saint Mary volleyball team found a way to get it done Wednesday night.

The Flames defeated Mount Marty University 3-2 by scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 23-25 and 15-5 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference contest.

"I'm just really proud of the ladies," CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "I'm extremely happy we found a way to dig deep and put it away in the fifth set."

Mount Marty won the opening set and Pruett said his squad was "just placing the ball instead of swinging."

But the Flames regrouped and won both the second and third sets. CSM was ahead 18-13 in the fourth set, but the Lancers rallied to tie it at 18-18 and then win it 25-23. The fifth set was all CSM as the Flames cruised to the deciding win.

"Offensively we were really aggressive after that first set," Pruett said. "It's nice to have four hitters in double digit kills. Madisyn Havermann had a great game and I thought Grace Werner was aggressive. Our setters did a great job distributing the ball. And I thought Krissy (Radicia) and Elen (Pruett) did a good job defensively for us."

Havermann led the squad with 18 kills, while Werner tallied 15, Azaria Green belted 14 and Liz Henrichson finished with 13. Setters Miranda Ring and Kaitlyn Busby finished with 39 and 27 assists, respectively. Pruett pushed up 20 digs, Radicia had 12 and Caitlin McCormack added eight.

The Flames improve to 5-9 in the GPAC and 14-13 overall. The Lancers drop to 4-10, 12-13. CSM returns to action Saturday with a 3 p.m. home contest vs. Doane University. Junior varsity starts at 1:30 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Flames.

*In junior varsity action Wednesday, CSM lost to Mount Marty 2-1.

*Wednesday was Pink Out Night for College of Saint Mary. The Flames raised money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
