College of Saint Mary finds more fifth-set magic

OMAHA, Neb. – The Flames continue to thrive in five.

College of Saint Mary used a remarkably balanced hitting attack and some timely blocking to rally past Hastings College 22-25, 25-15, 15-25, 25-21, 15-12 Tuesday at Lynn Farrell Arena for its third straight five-set Great Plains Athletic Conference volleyball victory.

The win clinches a spot in the GPAC Postseason Tournament for the Flames. CSM (16-13, 7-9 GPAC) earned the eighth seed and will play a 7:30 p.m. quarterfinal match on Saturday at top-seeded Northwestern College (27-0, 16-0), the nation's top-rated team.

"Big win for the Flames on the road,'' CSM Coach Rick Pruett said. "Another gut-check, character-testing victory. I am so proud of these ladies and how tough they are playing these last three weeks.''

CSM completed the season sweep of the Broncos (14-11, 8-8) by turning in clutch play when it mattered most. Trailing two sets to one and 12-11 in the fourth, the Flames scored the next seven points to lead 18-12. Azaria Green and reigning GPAC Player of the Week Liz Henrichson had two kills apiece during that run. CSM stayed in control to send the match to a fifth set.

Clinging to a 10-8 lead in the fifth, College of Saint Mary scored three of the next four points to take control at 13-9, with Grace Werner and Henrichson providing kills during that stretch. On the Flames' third match point, Madisyn Havermann smacked the clincher to follow up on five-set wins over Mount Marty and Doane the previous two times out.

"It was a great all-around team win,'' Pruett said.

Green and Werner led the offense with 15 kills, with Green hitting a sizzling .429 in the middle. Henrichson added 13 kills, while Havermann and Kayla Petersen added 11 apiece.

"Kayla was awesome on the outside,'' Pruett said.

Green had one solo block and four assists to lead the blockers, who combined for three solos and 12 assists. Elen Pruett made a team-high 26 digs and was joined in double figures by Werner (11), Kaitlyn Busby (10) and Krissy Radicia (10).

"We blocked well and played great defense,'' Coach Pruett said.
